Sons of The American Legion 25.47.0

Established in 1932, the Sons of The American Legion (S.A.L.) is dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of veteran parents. This organization welcomes males of all ages whose parents or grandparents have served in the U.S. military and were eligible for American Legion membership. Together with members of The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, S.A.L. forms a cohesive Legion Family with a collective membership of nearly 4.2 million.

While S.A.L. maintains its own membership structure, it operates as a program within The American Legion rather than as an independent entity. It is common for Legionnaires to hold dual membership in both organizations.

The organizational framework of S.A.L. includes detachments at the state level and squadrons at the local level, with each squadron affiliated with a local American Legion post. A squadron’s charter is reliant on that of its parent post, yet squadrons possess the autonomy to determine their specific community, state, and national service initiatives. This flexibility allows squadrons to develop programs that address local needs while remaining aligned with S.A.L.’s overarching mission: to uphold the four pillars of The American Legion. Consequently, their campaigns emphasize the preservation of American traditions and values, enhancement of the quality of life for children nationwide, support for veterans and their families, and the promotion of good citizenship fundamentals.

Since 1988, S.A.L. has made significant contributions to The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation, amassing over $6 million in support. Additionally, S.A.L. members have dedicated more than 320,000 hours volunteering in veterans hospitals and have raised in excess of $1 million for VA hospitals and homes.
